As we say goodbye to the first quarter of 2022 and move into the second, we thought we’d look at some of the big trends we’re already starting to see emerge in the I.T. and technology sector this year.
1. 5G takes off and 6G is on the way
We’ve already seen 4G bring about significant improvements for online activities like streaming video however, it has not been without its limitations and that’s where 5G comes in. According to
Ericsson’s Mobility Report, 5G technology subscriptions are expected to pass one billion this year and it’s easy to see why. 5G will help better support the internet of things, it will make uploading and downloading data up to 100 times faster and it will support hundreds of thousands of devices in crowded spaces without compromising connectivity. In other words, we’ll all have access to more power through our mobile and wearable tech over 2022 and beyond, especially as there’s already talk about 6G.
2. The Metaverse continues to grow
As we all know, towards the end of 2021,
Facebook rebranded as Meta in an effort to raise awareness of the metaverse, which Mark Zuckerberg described as the next step in social connectivity. The best way to describe the metaverse is as a hybrid of today’s existing online social experiences mixed with newer three-dimensional, more immersive experiences using technology and avatars where people can log in and socialize, collaborate, work, and play together. To make the metaverse a reality, it relies on technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as digital currencies and payment solutions like blockchain, so it’s unsurprising that as the popularity of the metaverse grows, so too will investment and adoption of technologies like these over the course of 2022.
3. Big data continues to get bigger
Big data has been around for some time now and it is continuing to get even bigger as businesses continue to invest in digital transformation strategies and new technologies. In 2022 we can expect to see more and more businesses starting to make the most of this data though, and moving from simply storing it, to using it to better understand their customers. This will lead to more and more immersive, relevant, and personalized customer experiences and that means businesses will need faster, more reliable, private and secure online technologies to deliver it.
4. Clean energy and new energy become priorities
With increasing concerns over global warning and not to mention the current situation in Ukraine, the focus on clean and new energy sources has never been higher. To date renewable energy like wind and solar has been the most effective and widespread attempt to develop sustainable energy production. However, over 2022 and beyond we’re expecting to see even more clean technology or cleantech trends take hold; such as biofuel generators, more eco-friendly waste management solutions and in the digital space, a move towards alterative crypto currencies which require less energy to mine than the likes of Bitcoin.
5. Even more emphasis on privacy and trust
Privacy and trust have been big concerns for both business and customers over the last few years. As a result, we’ve already seen several changes aimed at improving data protection and privacy online, with the likes of GDPR and Apple’s latest iOS updates and changes like this look set to continue well into the future. Over the course of 2022 we can expect to see more investment in privacy engaging computation like non-fungible tokens, blockchain technology and even smart contracts.
