MTech are delighted to announce that we are now performing Cyber Essentials tests for companies.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a government-run scheme. It’s designed to help British organisations, of any size, protect themselves against common business threats, by identifying technical security controls that an organisation needs to have in place.

Why should my business be Cyber Essentials certified?

For many organisations – especially SMEs - Cyber Essentials offers a vital step towards basic cyber security. Being certified greatly mitigates the risks faced to your business.

Customers are becoming increasingly likely to ask whether your business is cyber-secured. Cyber Essentials is a great way to prove this to your customers.

How can MTech help?

We have the tools to run through cyber essentials and have the expertise to guide you through the process to maximise what you get out of it.

The process covers the five key areas of business security outlined by Cyber Essentials:
  • Boundary Firewall and internet -Firewalls and gateways offer protection when a user connects to the Internet, provided they are set up correctly and have the right features enabled. While antivirus software helps protect the system against unwanted programs, a firewall helps to keep attackers or external threats from gaining access to your system in the first place.
  • Secure Configuration (such as initiating password policies) - Secure configuration refers to security measures that are   a broad range of malware (including computer viruses, worms, spyware, botnet software and ransomware) and including options for virus removal that will protect your computer, your privacy and your important documents from attack.
  • Patch Management - Patch management is about keeping software on computers and network devices up to date and capable of resisting cyber-attacks.
  • Malware Protection - Protecting against a broad range of malware (including computer viruses, worms, spyware, botnet software and ransomware) and including options for virus removal will protect your computer, your privacy and your important documents from attack.
  • Access Control (such as setting who can access what and management approval) - Protecting user accounts and helping prevent misuse of privileged accounts is essential for any cyber-secure system or network. User accounts, particularly those with special access privileges, should be assigned only to authorised individuals, managed effectively, and provide the minimum level of access to applications, computers and networks.

There are two levels of Cyber Essentials, standard and plus. Cyber Essentials Plus has all the benefits of the standard version, but involves an additional verification through an onsite, independent audit.

Whichever level of certification you choose, we will work with you to ensure that your business meets the requirements of these five areas. Once certified, your company can easily show that you have an ongoing and systematic approach to managing and protecting company and customer data. Your certification lasts for a year, and we can help you each year for the renewal.
